We move on to four more Caol Ila, ranging from 10 to 40 years old – partly because there’s no good reason not to, and partly because Caol Ila is hard to resist. After last week’s birthday, marked with two 47‑year‑old single grains that I reviewed on Monday, it feels only natural to keep the celebration going with a line‑up of both youthful and venerable Caol Ila.

Today we sample five independent Mannochmore, as we sadly cannot rely on the distillery itself to demonstrate their true quality. A quick look at Whiskybase reveals that, aside from a 12-year-old release in Diageo’s Flora & Fauna range, and some rare Prima & Ultima or Single Cask editions released sporadically, Mannochmore rarely issues official single malts. This means we must again depend on independent bottlers to discover what the distillery can achieve. First, let’s briefly introduce Mannochmore distillery, then review five independent Mannochmores from The Single Cask, Signatory Vintage, James Eadie, and Chorlton Whisky.

We return to Orkney with a review of three Independent Secret Orkney bottlings. As a reminder, Orkney only has two whisky distilleries: Highland Park and Scapa. None of these bottlings should be from Scapa, so you can easily guess their origin. By the way, I plan to review Scapa’s new core range soon, so stay tuned for that. We will examine today’s whiskies in ascending order of ABV, starting immediately with a relatively high proof, as the lowest ABV (57.1%!) in this selection is the Signatory 100 Proof bottling.
